Connecting the dots between course objectives, assessments, and learning activities
Tom Caswell, Director of Learning Engineering at Learning Objects, will give a talk on the following:
Most college courses are designed with objectives or outcomes, but few reference them beyond the syllabus. What happens when we link each objective to its corresponding assessment items and learning activities at a granular level? How can these connections be used to drive learning analytics, personalization, and course improvement? This presentation explores these questions from the perspective of teacher, student, and course designer.
Tom has over 15 years of experience in instructional design and learning sciences. He has developed personalized and competency-based courses and programs at a variety of higher education institutions and organizations, including Helix Education, Western Governors University, and the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges.
He holds an Ed.S. in Instructional Technology & Learning Sciences from Utah State University and a Masters in Educational Technology from Cal State University. He has been featured in EDUCAUSE’s Game Changers for his work on the Open Course Library of the Washington State Colleges. Tom also has 9 years of secondary and university teaching experience in Utah and California.
