The Edison Awards have honored some of the most innovative products and business leaders in the world. As one of the world’s most respected innovation awards, the awards are colloquially known as the “Oscars in Innovation.” In April 2021, The Edison Awards introduced the Lewis Latimer Fellowship Program, named after one of the first major African-American inventors and a draftsman for the patents of the incandescent light bulb. The Fellowship is designed to be an accelerator program for Black innovators with the passion and dedication to innovation that Lewis Latimer represented. Fellows possess the core attributes of empathy, pattern recognition, synthesis, and storytelling and imagination.

MIT Open Learning is excited to see how Prof. Harrell will continue to transform ideas to innovations as a Lewis Latimer Fellow.
